About Johan
Johan Huijkman is an accessibility engineer at Q42. He was one of the 3 people who talked a bit about the company and what they do there.
About Q42
Q42 is a company that is all about using technology to help people and make all digital items more accesible by anyone.
The company has about a 100 employees. Out of which 80+ are developers. These developers build apps and websites for a large amount of people.
Q42 builds digital products that make the lives of people smarter, better and more fun in their own words.
They proceded to show us some projects they worked on and what they did in these projects to help the people.
Appt.nl
Appt.nl is a website they built themselves to help people make their websites more accessible, and to show everyone that an accessible website doesnt have to look bad. In this website they talk about how to follow the WCAG guidelines and what to do beyond these guidelines to help people access your website properly.
Oculi-Mundi.nl
Oculi-mundi.nl is an amazing looking website Q42 built for a family that collects all sorts of maps. These maps even date back to around 1300. The family wanted to bring these maps to the world through digital means. And Q42 delivered an amazing experience in which you can walk through all the maps and globes to look for the maps you want.
Reflection
In this weekly nerd i learned quite a few things:
- I learned that accessibility isn't something that is reserved for simple websites.
- I learned that thinking about accessibility from the start saves you a lot of time over the course of the project.
- You can do some amazing things using just html, css and js.
For my selfimprovement
I think i will be using some of the things Johan talked about. Like using accessibility more often from the start of projects and using html, css and js first before thinking about using other tools like api's and other things.
