Danny and Marit both work at Waag Futurelab.

Danny Lämmerhirt is the lead of the Future Internet Lab at Waag Futurelab. His research looks to improve the usability and accessibility of everyday tech.

Marit is conceptontwikkelaar at the Academy-team of Waag, Where she works on the development and execution of the Public Stack Academy.

At waag futurelab technology is built for people with a focus on ethics. They like to take a step back and look at the problems from another angle. This way they build for the benefit of the consumers and not just the company’s

Technology stack

Technology is more than you think, at first you only see the perspective of the user. But behind that there is also the technology stack, designprocess and the foundation.

this so called stack is the way an app is built from the bottom up. most people only see the top part and at waag they want people to see more of the app than that.

The citizens should be put on a central spot. so they shouldn’t be used as a consumer for money.

Ecosystems in operating systems

We also had a conversation about different operating systems and their environments. For example Apple has s very closed off ecosystem. This has some benefits and some disadvantages. Like the fact that security is alot tighter in apples ecosystem. This is because apple makes it basically impossible for other operating systems to interact with Apple. But that is also the disadvantage. Since you can't work together with Apple well.

Habits

There was also the question of why we chose the systems we use. And funny enough a lot of people just stuck with their first phone because they were used to it. Another reason people use a certain system is because other people are using this aswell. Take Whatsapp for example. I never thought of using another app because everybody uses whatsapp.

Privacy

The last topic was about privacy. Most company’s these days don't handle your personal data with enough care. And some even sell your data to the highest bidder. This is also something to take into consideration when creating apps or choosing a device. You don't want all your data on the streets.

Reflection

Looking back on this presentation I think it was a bit dull. The presentation itself was given well but we have already had a bunch of conversations about these topics in other lessons. Because of this the topics that were discussed weren't new.

For my selfimprovement

The things I learned from this presentation were the fact that I should think about my actions more when it comes to the internet. I never thought about the fact that there were other messaging apps out there other than whatsapp.
